CASE STUDY
Spalign Concepts
Project type: website redesign, rebranding, ADA, UI/UX
2023
Context:
Spalign Concepts is a unique business providing a wide range of spa consulting services to both independent and corporate locations throughout the US. The site, which I had initially designed and launched in 2010 (and subsequently updated by the company’s founder) was in need of a fresher look that also took advantage of the advances in site design, CMS options and availability, plugin support, and performance reporting since the site was originally launched.
Challenges:
The client wanted to keep the same look and feel of the previous site, particularly with the imagery, so the goal became to enhance what was already present and to better visually organize the information within the layout.
Additionally, I recommended that the company consider adding some additional text content to the site to take better advantage of the improvements in how Google looked at sites to determine placement within its rank return policy.
While the site is primarily an online business card, and subsequently, ranking is not a major factor in the success of the site, I felt that the small amount of content could be better divided in order to separate thoughts and allow us to include additional headers and visuals within the space.
Consultation:
The company’s founder and I collaborated on the updated concept through a series of meetings and collaborative working sessions throughout the rebuild process. I recommended that we shift from the WordPress Gutenberg block editor to Divi builder to allow us to take advantage of the latest in site builder tools and plugins. Finally, I recommended that we re-download images we planned to reuse and optimize them correctly to ensure we were not causing a delay in site load times due to a lack of image compression.
Project Scope:
- Shift the site from an old-school free WordPress template to Divi builder in order to take advantage of the latest in build tools and plugin support
- Keep the original color scheme, but refine it to ensure that the colors followed ADA guidelines for readability and contrast
- Keep the site very clean and minimalistic to allow the site information to shine, but still keep the layouts and navigation engaging to encourage end-users to interact with buttons and links
- Select updated images and ensure proper optimization
